England have become the first national side, men or women, to reach a World Cup final since 1966.

Sarina Wiegman's side beat Australia 3-1 in Sydney on Wednesday to set up an historic clash with Spain, as they bid to go one better than their European Championship title win at Wembley last summer.

Goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp — after Sam Kerr had levelled brilliantly for Australia — and Alessia Russo saw England through to the final after a superb display at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Their passage to the final came less than 12 months after a player revolt against coach Jorge Vilda.

Fifteen Spanish players had threatened to walk away if Vilda was still in his position after citing working conditions in the squad.

However, Vilda stayed in the role after the Spanish FA gave him the green light to continue.

Spain had beaten the Netherlands in the quarter-final.
