Big Country elections: School board bonds shot down in Brookesmith, Ranger, Stephenville

Big Country voters Saturday split on the question of school bonds, rejecting propositions in three out of four area school districts.

Voters rejected both of Stephenville ISD' propositions totaling $75 million.

The first — asking for $50 million for the construction of a football stadium — failed by a margin of 1,344 to 1,604. The second proposition of $25 million for an indoor athletic facility and other athletic improvements had 1,242 votes approving and 1,696 opposed.

All three of Ranger ISD's propositions — which requested a total of $4.25 million — were rejected by wide margins.

The first, which asked for $2.3 millin for school building improvements, had only 47 votes in approval against 192 votes against, with the other two propositions — requesting $1.35 million for athletic facilities and $600,000 for teacher housing — fared even worse, with margins of 200-42 against and 201-36 against, respectively.

Voters in Brookesmith ISD also soundly rejected the request for $9.95 million for school facilities, rejecting the plan 245-72.

Baird ISD voters, however, widely approved the proposition before them Saturday, with 234 affirmative votes for $17 million for school facilities and buses to 111 against.

Here are unofficial results from Saturday's elections in the Abilene area.
