The first big Powerball jackpot has already happened for 2024.
A lucky Michigan ticket buyer started the new year with a big win after Monday night's drawing, walking away with a jackpot worth $842.4 million. The cash value? $425.2 million.
Originally, Powerball estimated the jackpot would only hit $810 million, but a surge of ticket buyers pushed it to the fifth-largest Powerball prize ever and moved it into the top 10 highest lottery jackpots of all time.
Even if you didn't win big, don't throw out your ticket just yet. Nationwide, the Powerball drawing produced more than 1.8 million winning tickets, according to Powerball.

Drawings are held at approximately 10:59 p.m. ET every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
Can the Powerball jackpot winner remain anonymous?

How often does the lottery hit $1 billion or more?
2024 may not have started off with a $1 billion lottery prize, but it was awfully close. And now, having Powerball or Mega Millions hit the $1 billion mark isn't as uncommon as it used to be.
In the last five years, there have been eight jackpots between Mega Millions and Powerball that have gone over the $1 billion mark. And three of those happened in 2023.
The highest lottery jackpot came in November 2022 at $2.04 billion. It was the second jackpot over $1 billion that year. Before that the only other times a jackpot hit over a billion was in 2021, 2018 and 2016.
