Woodbridge home destroyed by fire; 3 firefighters treated

WOODBRIDGE – Three residents were displaced after their Rahway Avenue home was destroyed in a Wednesday night fire where three firefighters required medical treatment.

The family has relocated with relatives. Two firefighters were treated at the scene for heat-related issues and another firefighter was taken to the hospital, officials said.

A call came in around 9:21 p.m. Wednesday about a fire at a single-family home at 1280 Rahway Ave. in the Avenel section, Avenel Fire Official Cory Spillar said.

Spillar said a homeowner was in the living room when she noticed embers on the outside of the home. All three residents ran out and got a garden hose to extinguish the fire before smoke started billowing from the roof and the blaze took off, he said.

Spillar said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, and the origin is the area around the porch light. He said because a portion of the second-floor roof collapsed into the second floor, it's not safe to determine if there was an electrical issue.

He said the house was destroyed by the fire, adding once the roof collapsed, firefighters fought the flames from outside the structure.
