In New Jersey, under a directive from the Attorney General's Office, all officer-involved shootings are investigated by a team of prosecutors and law enforcement professionals that is completely independent of the agencies that employ any of the officers involved in the shooting.

The directive applies to any discharge of a firearm by a law enforcement officer in the course of their duties, regardless of whether the shooting resulted in death.
