Woodbridge teen sentenced to probation for bringing loaded handgun to school

NEW BRUNSWICK – A 16-year-old Woodbridge boy was sentenced to two years’ probation for bringing a loaded handgun to John F. Kennedy Memorial High School earlier this year.

The teen, whose identity was released by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office but is being withheld by MyCentralJersey.com because of his age, pleaded guilty June 24 to unlawful possession of a weapon before Superior Court Judge Deborah Venezia, the prosecutor’s office announced Tuesday. The state argued for two years’ incarceration at the June 30 sentencing, the prosecutor’s office said.

Woodbridge police responded to the high school in the Iselin section of the township on March 28 on report that a student was in possession of a handgun, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Arriving officers learned school staff received a tip that a student was carrying a gun in his fanny pack, the prosecutor’s office said. The student was questioned and searched by school staff when he arrived that morning, and a loaded 9mm handgun was found in his possession, the prosecutor's office said.

The teen was charged with acts of juvenile delinquency for offenses which if committed by an adult would have been unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, second-degree crimes, and possession of a weapon in an educational institution, a third-degree crime.
