WooSox: Field conditions in Buffalo force another postponement

With Sahlen Field in Buffalo in rough condition, the Worcester Red Sox and the Buffalo Bisons may have to relocate if they expect to play baseball in the coming days.

The Triple-A teams were supposed to play a six-game series, but rough weather and other factors have upended baseball plans. The first three attempts at a six-game series - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - were postponed.

At midmorning Thursday, the Bisons announced that the day's scheduled doubleheader was called off. The teams are due to square off through Sunday.

And with crews having trouble with the rain-soaked field, there are questions whether conditions will be right by the weekend.

On the Talk of the Commonwealth radio show Thursday morning, Dr. Charles Steinberg, WooSox president, told host Hank Stolz that there is a possibility weekend games could be switched from Buffalo to Polar Park. But that scenario was later dismissed by a team spokesman, who said Plan B would be to move the games to Rochester.

According to the The Buffalo News, the unplayable conditions at Sahlen Field are due in part to windstorms that damaged the tarp that covered the infield. A temporary replacement tarp did not hold up to continued winds and heavy rain. The result was a wet and muddy infield, even after the weather cleared up.
