WOOSTER – A new member will be joining the Wayne County Community Foundation's 18-member board, representing the Wooster area.

Dr. Cyril Ofori will fill the vacant seat once held by J.C. Johnston III, who left earlier this year, according to a WCCF announcement.

A nearly-three decade veteran of the medical field, Ofori practices cardiology at Wooster Community Hospital with a specialization in diagnosing, monitoring and treating diseases or conditions like heart attacks, heart murmurs, coronary heart disease and hypertension.

Ofori is an adjunct professor at the College of Wooster and serves as the executive director of the Wooster Chamber Music Series. He also is on the board for the American Red Cross in Wayne County.

In Ghana, he volunteers with the Minnesota-based Africa Partners Medical and participates in medical missions to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and sees patients virtually.

He and his wife, Dr. Amelia Laing, co-founded and own the nonprofit women's hospital Obaatan Pa Women's Hospital in Ghana.

Ofori's career began in 1987 when he graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School.

Soon after graduating, he completed an internship at Harlem Hospital Center, an affiliate of Columbia University, and a residency at Sinai Hospital, a Johns Hopkins University Center affiliate.

He completed cardiology training at Weston Pennsylvania Hospital and was an attending physician at the Cleveland VA Medical Center/UH and Case Western Reserve University.

The WCCF is a nonprofit charitable organization that has returned more than $100 million in grants and scholarships to the community.
