Last week, Wooster's Ava Mathur made her second trip to Mason and the Div. I State Tennis Tournament.

When the sophomore hit the court at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, it marked just the second time since 1992 that a Generals girls' tennis player had made the trip.

Mathur's road to state included taking a sectional title in the Div. I Northeast Springside Sectional and finished fifth at the district tournament to advance. She did all of this in just her first year of playing singles in the postseason tournaments after earning a trip to state in doubles in 2021.

She was presented with a mountain of a task when she was paired up with senior Lilly Black from Anthony Wayne in a first round matchup. A year ago, Black lost in the Div. I state finals to Mason's Shyla Aggarwal 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. It was clear that Black was on a mission this year as she dealt Mathur a tough loss to cap a stellar year for the Wooster sophomore 6-2, 6-1. Black fell in the semifinals and finished third in the state tournament.

For Mathur, it proved to be yet another thrilling experience as she continues to blossom and develop, while adding to the history of Wooster girls' tennis.
