Worcester man faces more than a dozen charges in Westborough stalking case

WESTBOROUGH A Worcester man alleged to have threatened his ex-girlfriend's life and was found with a loaded shotgun will be held without bail until at least Thursday.

Carlos Garrastegui Rivera, 21, was ordered held without bail Monday at his Westborough District Court arraignment pending a hearing to determine whether he is a danger to the public. That hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

Last Saturday afternoon, police responded to the Knights of Columbus on Willow Street to reports about a woman at an event there being threatened, according to a Westborough Police Department press release.

Westborough police say they found this shotgun in the car of a stalking suspect.

The woman said her ex-boyfriend, Rivera, had called and threatened to kill her. The woman and her 4-year-old daughter have a restraining order against Rivera, according to police.

Police soon found a Honda Pilot driving near the Knights of Columbus that was registered to Rivera. Police attempted to stop it, but the car drove off and led police on a brief chase. Police lost sight of it but quickly found the Pilot in a parking lot on East Main Street.

"When the officers encountered the suspect, he fled the area for a second time, this time leading officers on a foot pursuit," according to the release.

Police, using dogs from both their own department and the Massachusetts State Police, found Rivera hiding in a thickly wooded area near East Main Street.

Police say they obtained a warrant to search Rivera's vehicle and found a loaded shotgun in it.
