Worcester Police Officers made their tribute run to D.C. 425 miles from Worcester

Worcester officers have officially made it through their 400-mile fundraising relay from Worcester to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. as of Thursday morning just before 6 a.m.

The run is in honor of fallen Officer Manny Familia, who passed in 2021 attempting to rescue a 14-year-old boy from drowning in a pond.

According to a Facebook post, their journey came to an end when they located Manny’s name which had recently been added to the Memorial among all the law enforcement heroes who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

“The Memorial serves as a sacred place where law enforcement agencies from across the nation will gather this week (National Police Week) to honor their fallen colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Worcester police said. “We will continue to keep Officer Familia’s legacy alive and he will never be forgotten.”

The group consists of 20 Worcester Police Officers, and the relay was split into about a dozen miles per day, after leaving Worcester on Monday.

Wednesday morning, the officers stopped in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where the Phoenixville Police Department let the group shower at the station before starting the last leg of their journey.
