WORCESTER — Police are investigating a fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl in a supermarket parking lot overnight.

The teen, whose identity has not been publicly released by police, was found shot in the Big Y parking lot at 100 Mayfield St. early Saturday morning, and transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3:23 a.m.

According to the Worcester Police Department, offers were dispatched to the Big Y parking lot at about 2:47 a.m. for a report of a person shot.

Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old female gunshot victim.

Officers assisted the victim medically until an ambulance arrived and transported her to the hospital.

The Crime Scene Unit and Detective Bureau secured the crime scene and began the follow-up investigation.

The incident does not appear to be random in nature, police said, and the investigation is ongoing.
