Worcester police investigating shooting on Upsala Street

WORCESTER - A 20-year-old man was transported to a local hospital in one of two shootings that rattled the Vernon Hill neighborhood after the city Independence Day Celebration Thursday.

Police said the wounded man was found in the area of 65 Upsala St. about 10 p.m., after officers received a report of gunshots. He was treated on scene and taken to a hospital.

Minutes earlier, shots in the area of 103 Dorchester St. activated a ShotSpotter alert to police. That investigation is ongoing.

ShotSpotter systems provide police with the number of shots fired, shooter position, direction of travel and the exact time of gunfire.

The city lit up with Fourth of July activity Thursday evening, with a fireworks show over Cristofo Colombo Park on Shrewsbury Street about 9:30 p.m.

In 2019, an 18-year-old man died and a second teen was injured on Gage Street after the city's annual Independence Day Celebration.
