Worcester takes down job posting tweet that included 'insensitive' meme

WORCESTER — The city has deleted a social media post with imagery it determined was "insensitive.”

The post went online Wednesday afternoon across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, said the city manager’s office, and was meant to encourage job seekers to consider applying for employment with the city.

A screenshot posted on the Facebook group Worcester Political Dialogue shows the post used the long-running “distracted boyfriend” meme, which shows a man walking with his girlfriend while looking over his shoulder at another woman.

“Looking for new opportunities?” said the post. ”Take a look at some of the jobs the city has to offer. There is something for everyone with lots of added benefits.”

The boyfriend was labeled ”you,” the girlfriend “your current situation” and the passerby “Work for Worcester job application.”

On Thursday, the city posted a new statement on its social media channels: “We removed a previous post that we recognize was insensitive, and we are aware it may still be circulating on social media. It has been addressed by staff, and we have made adjustments to our review process to prevent it from happening again.”
