Worker electrocuted while 40 feet up in the air, 3,000 without power

(KRON) — A worker who was 40 feet in the air in a bucket lift came in contact with a power line on Friday and was electrocuted, according to the San Jose Fire Department. Two men were in the bucket lift at the time, which was operating near the intersection of Zanker Road and Vilaggio Street in North San Jose.

The man who was electrocuted suffered burn injuries, but is alive and conscious, according to officials. The other individual did not make contact with the wire but suffered flash burns. He is being evaluated.

The lift cannot be lowered, SJFD said. Crews remain at the scene at the ready to perform a rescue, once PG&E has shut off electricity and the equipment has been grounded, officials said.

PG&E reported getting the call at 11 a.m. and proceeded to the scene immediately. PG&E, San Jose FD, and the San Jose Police Department have set up a perimeter to keep bystanders at a distance. Power has been shut off for over 3,000 customers near the site,

PG&E is currently attempting to ground the specific transmission line to both lower the bucket and prevent future breakouts.

According to the San Jose Fire Department, the worker who was injured came into contact with the wire through his helmet and suffered burns to the upper half of his body. Officials say the workers were subcontractors for an apartment complex and they do not have exact understanding of what they were doing at the time of the incident.

Both workers were taken to Valley Medical Center, according to San Jose FD.

A loud popping noise could be heard when the worker made contact with the line, according to SFFD.
