Between making Grammy-award-winning music, writing a book, launching a fitness application, and being a mom to two boys, country star Carrie Underwood says she still manages to take some time for herself between all the madness.

The singer’s main priority in life is to keep her health in check through workouts and healthy eating, but the one workout goal she is extra focused on? Staying hydrated.

“Staying hydrated is something that I feel like we can all take for granted and maybe don't pay enough attention to, so I try to make it easy, always available, and now it's just part of my routine,” Underwood recently told Shape. The singer says she likes to sip on BODYARMOR electrolyte drinks, a brand she recently partnered with.

When it comes to her workouts, Underwood said she does “whatever I have time for,” which usually includes circuit training, weight lifting, and running.

“My current fitness plan is working in working out whenever I can,” Underwood said. “We have so much going on right now. I have two children that are extremely active and busy, and I'm also prepping for a lot of different things at the moment: the holidays, rehearsals for my upcoming Las Vegas residency, etc. So, I do the best I can to take care of myself in the midst of all of that.”

And to help others succeed in their health goals in between their busy schedules, the Before He Cheats singer was motivated to launch a fitness application that focuses on short, effective workouts for those who don’t have time for a full gym session.

“I try my best to work in something,” she said. “The most important thing is to move. If you do that, and you give what you have, your day will be better for it.”

Over the years, Underwood has learned to focus on treating her body with respect and nourishing it with workouts that feel good and foods that provide proper nutrition and hydration—while staying true to her values. She says following an overall healthy, plant-based diet has been essential to keeping her healthy and in shape to perform.

“I've been vegetarian for many, many years and I flirt with veganism, so I'm somewhere in between the two,” she said. “Honestly, I just make sure I'm eating real food. I love vegetables and fruit—and now there are so many options for people that don't eat meat, but are like meat. Generally, I just try to make good choices and eat real food.”

She even shared her go-to lunch recipe with Shape that she uses as both a post-workout protein punch and a portable lunch option. Underwood loves to blend BODYARMOR LYTE electrolyte drink, with beet juice, mixed berries, spinach or kale, protein powder, and ice for a filling, easy to throw together smoothie that’s also incredibly hydrating.

“I feel like the more I know, the more information and knowledge that I have about health and fitness, the more I focus on what's going on inside my body and focus on getting stronger and staying fit and healthy—those are my priorities right now,” she said.

“I try to focus on the inside first. And that is something that has evolved in my journey over the years and leads me to a place where I feel good in my skin.”
