The Beer Garden in Deer District has played venue to a variety of events, from watch parties to markets. And soon, the World Burrito Eating Championship.

Never heard of it? Probably because it's being called the "first ever." The event, hosted by Qdoba, is scheduled for April 6 to coincide with National Burrito Day.

Fans are invited to witness 10 professional eaters — including Joey Chestnut, Geoff Esper and Eric “Badlands” Booker — compete to set a world record and consume as many Qdoba burritos as possible during a 10-minute window, according to organizers. The winner will receive a cash prize.

"Burritos are one of my favorite foods," Chestnut told the Journal Sentinel. "When I found out that it was Qdoba, I knew it would be easy for me to practice with because the food in the contest is what I can get here in Indianapolis. So I can practice and build a tolerance, which has been fun. I love it."

Chestnut, who goes by "Jaws," is a 15-time winner of the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. He's ranked the No. 1 competitive eater by Major League Eating and holds at least 55 world records, according to MLE's website.

One of those records is in the category of "burritos, longform" for eating 14.5 pounds of burritos in 10 minutes at Illegal Pete's Burritos in 2016. He said it seems like he'll have a "good chance" to break it at the Milwaukee championship.

Competitive eating "combines the best things in life," Chestnut said. For him, that includes eating great food, traveling to awesome places, meeting people, and of course, competing.

"There's no better feeling than knowing that I'm pushing, and I can see the people next to me eating, and I can almost feel when they slow down, and they just can't keep up anymore," Chestnut said. "It's an addicting feeling, knowing that I can just push it harder, and their body just can't keep up."

In 2018, Chestnut paid a visit to Wisconsin to participate in the State Fair's first Cheese Curd Eating Championship. He ended up coming in third.

"I'm hoping I can redeem myself with a win in Wisconsin," he said.

How Joey Chestnut is preparing for the World Burrito Eating Championship

Chestnut has a couple of practices for the World Burrito Eating Championship under his belt, and is currently recovering from his last. He needs about five days to a week in between to give his body enough time to recover.

He's planning his next practice for Friday, and might try to sneak a small one in early next week.

Before each practice, he goes through a cleanse period of drinking lemon juice and water so that he's "empty and loose," as well as hungry.

When practice time comes, he lines up burritos, sets up a timer and gets "all amped up and ready to eat." Then it's go time.

Some rules he's expecting to see at this competition include no pouring liquid on top of the burritos, not being able to move on to your next burrito until the one you're eating is completely gone, and "if you heave, you leave," meaning if a contestant throws up, they get disqualified.

What else to expect from the World Burrito Eating Championship

In addition to competitive eating, the event will feature music, free food samples, giveaways, activities and more, the news release said.

The event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For people who want to watch the competition but can't attend, it will be live-streamed on Qdoba's social media channels, including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok at noon April 6, per the news release.
