(SOUNDBITE) (English) 19-YEAR-OLD RUBIK'S CUBER FROM THE U.S., PATRICK PONCE, SAYING:

"So for Christmas of 2010, I had this cousin that came down to visit from Canada. It was the first time I ever met them and she had a Cube with her and she could do it. She wasn't a very fast or anything, but just the fact that she could do it was complete insanity to me. And then so maybe about a year after that, I learnt how to do it on my own. And then a couple of months after that, I found out about competitions and all that, and I went to one and I've just taken off ever since. Yeah."

"One of my brother's friends, he was around our house one day back in 2014 and we had like a dollar store Cube lying around, which he picked up and solved. And I thought, Oh, that's kind of cool. I want to be able to do that. // And then I just continued to watch tutorials, learn a bit more over the next few days. I think it was on my third day of learning I finally got it."

The 32 finalists can compete in four categories

Their cubes are connected using an app

to track times and ensure accuracy

(SOUNDBITE) (English) 19-YEAR-OLD RUBIK'S CUBER FROM THE UK, GEORGE SCHOLEY, SAYING:

"What we'll do is we'll have up to 15 seconds to inspect, we'll like just scramble it using like the notation that was just given. We'll just be given the scramble, and it'll be completely random and then we'll be like just going like face to, like head to head with someone and just seeing how fast we can solve it. And obviously, the first person to finish is the winner.”
