Should You Be Worried About Insider Transactions At Acacia Research Corporation (NASDAQ:ACTG)?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Acacia Research Corporation (NASDAQ:ACTG).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock on the market. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

Acacia Research Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the , Robert Stewart, sold US$167k worth of shares at a price of US$3.61 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$3.19. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern. Robert Stewart was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.
