Worthington's Hickory Lodge won't reopen

Aug. 22—WORTHINGTON — Nearly four months after the Hickory Lodge Bar and Grill suffered isolated fire and extensive smoke damage inside the Norwood Inn on North Humiston Avenue, restaurant owners Shaila and Arond Peil have announced the permanent closure of Hickory Lodge.

"After the (April 22) fire, ... we 100% planned to get things fixed up and reopened," they shared Monday morning. "Unfortunately, that didn't go as planned in the months after the fire."

The Peils said they couldn't come up with a reasonable deal with the owners of the Norwood Inn, and decided it was in their best interest to move out.

The couple, who opened The Mav Grill in the former Ground Round building along Ryan's Road in October 2022, found work for nearly all of their Hickory Lodge employees at The Mav. Now, they are taking some of their most popular menu items from Hickory Lodge and bringing them to The Mav this week.

"We have decided to add the best of both worlds and combine many of Hickory's favorites — like the homemade pizzas, broasted chicken, Canadian walleye, Philly sandwich, hamburger steak and much more into The Mav Grill's menu," shared Shaila Peil. "We have also expanded into breakfast now at The Mav on Saturdays and Sundays, opening at 8:30 a.m."

Currently, the Mav will be open until 3 p.m. on Sundays, but the Peils plan to extend Sunday hours in the coming weeks, she added.

In addition to the expanded menu, The Mav Grill now also offers delivery.

"Whether you want pizza, a burger, a steak or any of our menu items, we will bring it to you — Monday through Sunday," the Peils shared. People are welcome to call in their orders at (507) 343-0627 or visit themavgrill.com to place an order for delivery or carry-out.

The Mav's kitchen will open at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

"We will also continue having Mike and Marv cook up that delicious food for all of your catering events out of The Mav Grill," they noted. Catering events can be booked via email at

While the Peils put a lot of time and effort into serving the community through two local restaurants, combining efforts now at The Mav Grill has them thinking about potential opportunities in the future.

"Anything is possible if the opportunity presents itself," they said. "We have a few ideas. We will see what comes of them in the future. For now, we're doing what we can and bringing back Hickory's food staples to The Mav Grill and look forward to serving you all at The Mav Grill."
