WPI in line for $6.6 million from FEMA for COVID-19 response

WORCESTER — In the latest round of COVID-19 response funding, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has directed $6.6 million to Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

The money is a reimbursement for testing and staffing related to the pandemic.

The funds, which can be used to cover any contracts, is targeted for expenses between July 2020 and January 2021.

Other schools in the region, including Holy Cross, received FEMA money in May.

“Providing resources for our institutions of higher education in combating the COVID-19 pandemic is critical to their success, and to our success as a nation,” said Lori Ehrlich, FEMA Region 1 administrator.

In other recent FEMA funding, the agency will send $628,202 to the Stetson School in Barre for COVID-19 costs.

The money is part of the nearly $4.8 million the state Department of Children and Families is due to receive for the care of youths in its custody during the pandemic.
