BASEBALL

Class 4A

No. 5 Beaver Area 4, Elizabeth Forward 2

No. 10 Blackhawk 7, No. 7 Indiana 5 — A three-run sixth inning helped the Cougars play spoiler in their opening round victory over Indiana on Wednesday afternoon. Louis Sebastian led the way for Blackhawk, going 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBIs, while Antonio Borello, Ryan Jones, Zane Priestas-Kish, and Jake Sheesley all had big games as well. Matt Fowlow earned the win for Lou Wolber's squad, going 5.0 innings on the hill, allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits and a walk while striking out six. Blackhawk advances to the quarterfinals where it will take on No. 2 West Mifflin at a time and location to be determined.

No. 9 Quaker Valley 7, No. 8 Highlands 1 — After earning their spot in the Class 4A bracket in the final week of the regular season, the Quakers proved they belonged on Wednesday afternoon, winning in convincing fashion over Highlands by a final of 7-1. Zeke Hendricks played his usual role of leader, notching a pair of hits and RBIs while teammates Tommaso Floro and Adam Tanabe both tripled. Ethan Faris also had a two hit game with two RBIs. Quaker Valley advances to the WPIAL quarterfinals where it will face No. 1 seed Montour at a time and location to be determined.

SOFTBALL

Class 4A

No. 8 Freeport Area 8, No. 9 Central Valley 1

No. 4 Yough 7, No. 13 Blackhawk 3 — Blackhawk hung around through four innings but ultimately fell to Yough 7-3 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs. The No. 13-seed Cougars got a two-run home run and two RBIs from sophomore Karma Malcom, but it wasn’t enough to pull the upset.

Class 2A

No. 6 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) 16, Mohawk Area 10

No. 4 Chartiers-Houston 10, No. 13 Riverside 0 — Riverside snuck into the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, but following a 10-0 first-round loss to Chartiers-Houston, its time in the postseason has come to an end. The No. 13-seed Panthers couldn’t muster a run against the red-hot No. 4-seed Buccaneers.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Class 2A

No. 1 Blackhawk 15, No. 8 Aquinas Academy 2 — Blackhawk is clearly on a mission to get back to the WPIAL title game, and in its 15-2 victory over Aquinas Academy in the second round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs, it showed. The No. 1-seed Cougars saw two players score three goals and three others net two a piece in their rout of the No. 8-seed Crusaders.
