WPIAL releases alignments for 2022-2023, 2023-2024 fall sports seasons

Tuesday afternoon the WPIAL released the new section alignments for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 fall sports seasons. Numerous teams throughout the area will have a much different looking schedule due to either moving in classification or being relocated to a new section.

The projected alignments for all WPIAL sports over the next two academic years can be found here.

Of the 117 registered WPIAL football programs, all but one has its classification and section cemented, with the outlier being Aliquippa. On Tuesday afternoon, Aliquippa officially filed its second appeal to the PIAA regarding the football program's promotion from Class 4A to Class 5A due to the competition formula.

Because of Aliquippa's pending status, the WPIAL has scenarios in place for if the Quips stay in Class 5A, remain in Class 4A or are even moved down to Class 3A. Below are the projected WPIAL football alignments for the next two seasons:

WPIAL Class 6A

Section 1: Canon-McMillan, Central Catholic, Mt. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Seneca Valley

WPIAL Class 5A

Section 1: Baldwin, Bethel Park, Moon, Peters Township, South Fayette, Upper St. Clair

Section 2: Franklin Regional, Gateway, Hempfield, Norwin, Penn-Trafford, Plum, Woodland Hills

Section 3: Aliquippa, Fox Chapel, North Hills, Penn Hills, Pine-Richland, Shaler

Note: Woodland Hills will move from Section 2 to Section 3 if Aliquippa is not in WPIAL Class 5A next season.

WPIAL Class 4A

Section 1: Aliquippa, Ambridge, Blackhawk, Central Valley, Chartiers Valley, Montour, New Castle, West Allegheny

Section 2: Armstrong, Hampton, Highlands, Indiana, Kiski, Mars, North Catholic

Section 3: Connellsville, Greater Latrobe, Laurel Highlands, McKeesport, Ringgold, Thomas Jefferson, Trinity

WPIAL Class 3A

Section 1: Aliquippa, Avonworth, Beaver, Hopewell, Quaker Valley, Seton La Salle, South Park

Section 2: Deer Lakes, East Allegheny, Freeport, Knoch, Shady Side Academy, Valley, West Mifflin

Section 3: Belle Vernon, Elizabeth Forward, Greensburg Salem, Mt. Pleasant, South Allegheny, Southmoreland

Note: West Mifflin will move from Section 2 to Section 1 if Aliquippa is not in WPIAL Class 3A next season.

WPIAL Class 2A

Section 1: Apollo-Ridge, Burrell, Derry, Imani Christian, Ligonier Valley, Serra Catholic, Steel Valley, Yough

Section 2: Beaver Falls, Ellwood City, Freedom Area, Mohawk, Neshannock, New Brighton, Riverside, Western Beaver

Section 3: Brentwood, Charleroi, Keystone Oaks, McGuffey, Sto-Rox, Washington, Waynesburg Central

WPIAL Class 1A

Section 1: Clairton, Frazier, Greensburg C.C., Jeannette, Leechburg, Riverview, Springdale

Section 2: Bentworth, Beth Center, California, Carmichaels, Jefferson-Morgan, Mapletown, Monessen, West Greene

Section 3: Avella, Bishop Canevin, Burgettstown, Carlynton, Chartiers Houston, Cornell, Fort Cherry, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

Section 4: Laurel, Northgate, Rochester, Shenango, South Side, Summit Academy, Union
