Those wanting answers at 149 pounds for Penn State wrestling will have to wait.

Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson did not name a starter at the class when he spoke to the media Tuesday afternoon. Tyler Kasak and David Evans both wrestled at Lock Haven’s Mat Town Open II tournament Sunday rather than taking part in the Nittany Lions’ dual against Maryland.

The head coach said doing that gives the team flexibility.

“I think they both had three or four matches,” Sanderson said. “Which kind of helps with their match count and gives us a little bit of flexibility, and takes us a little bit of the urgency off of that decision. Obviously head to head and being in the same event plays a big role in where we’ll go with it.”

Both Kasak and Evans have wrestled for the program in duals recently and faced off in Sunday’s tournament. Kasak won the match by decision, 4-2.

Sanderson said that result could factor into the decision.

“I think this Sunday was an important part of the process,” he said. “But just saying, now that they both were able to pick up some more matches, we have a little bit more flexibility and time. It’s not something we have to decide by Friday night. We could let it play out a week or two.”

The Nittany Lions will next take on Ohio State Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Rec Hall.
