Dundee freshman girls wrestler Peyton Mullin won the school’s first ever NYSPHSAA title, on Friday. The standout freshman made an improbable run to the finals in the 235 pound bracket of at the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational at the SRC Arena and Events Center. Mullin defeated, defending champion, and Waverly standout Mackenzie LaForest via fall 1:05 into the match.

Prior to the state final, Mullin earned her way to the tournament in impressive fashion. Two weeks ago, Mullin rolled past the top heavyweights in Section V, winning the girls state qualifier. One week later, the freshman took first place in the Wayne-Finger Lakes Wrestling Championships. With plenty of momentum, Mullin entered the state tournament as the 9th seed. Mullin opened the tournament with a win over Kittery VanGuilder (Hadley-Luzerne) via fall, in 1:14 of the 1st period. In round 2, Mullin pinned top-ranked Alexis Durdon (Windsor) after holding a 4-0 lead through 2 periods. After the upset victory, Mullin continued to dominate. The standout pinned Patricia Deslandes (Minisink Valley) after once again leading 4-0, in the 1st period. Finally, Mullin defeated the defending champion, LaForest. Mullin stormed out of the gates with a 2 point takedown, before LaForest responded with an escape. With the 2-1 edge, Mullin took down LaForest a second time, giving her a 4-1 advantage, and leading to the pin.

Waverly’s LaForest finished the highest of any Section IV girls wrestler in the tournament.

Dundee Head Coach Sheldon Gibson provided a statement to 18 Sports, via text message, on Mullin’s state title win:

“Peyton qualified for the state invitational by beating the best heavyweight girls in Section V two weeks ago. Being a 14 year-old freshman, she was only seeded 9th in the Championship tournament and was a complete ‘unknown’. With four massive victories coming via pin, she was able to put herself and our little town on the map! We are going to enjoy this but at the same time, we are excited for the future and new challenges.”

In addition to the wrestling state championship, Mullin continued her winning ways with a first place finish at the Wayne-Finger Lakes Division 2 Girls Shot Put Championship, on Saturday. Mullin earned 10 points for Dundee/Bradford with a flight of 30′ 9 1/4″ (9.37m). Mullin’s distance was over 2 feet further than 2nd place.
