Wrestler Severn at Cravings Saturday: Store has new owner, offers sports cards and items

Mixed martial arts pioneer/wrestler Dan “The Beast” Severn will be at Cravings Sports Cards and Collectibles, 31 E. Front St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

“Severn is considered one of the leading pioneers of mixed martial arts and the first true world-class wrestler to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship,” event organizers said.

In the early days of the UFC, Severn became the only UFC Triple Crown champion in history. He also holds a professional MMA record of 101-19-7. He is a two-time world champion and a heavyweight champion.

Today, Severn has partnered with Tim Graver, a retired law enforcement officer, to train police officers. To begin, the pair interviewed officers about attacks and altercations that led to positions of disadvantages on the ground.

“Over 70 percent of law enforcement altercations end on the ground, so they will be taught controlled takedown and how to turn a position of disadvantage to a position of advantage,” event organizers said.

Cravings Sports Cards and Collectibles buys, sells and trades sports cards and sports memorabilia and is locally owned by Lawrence Shinevarre. The store was formerly called Cravings and was operated by Shaun and Sheila McGowan. The McGowans sold desserts in addition to sports items.

"We don't sell food or dessert. We're strictly a hobby shop. We sell sports cards, Pokemon cards, Magic: The Gathering cards and card supplies. We also are buyers of collections of all sizes," Shinevarre said.

Cravings Sports Cards and Collectibles is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
