Wrestlers, a goalkeeper and guard share Shasta Family Athlete of the Week award

Four Redding-based athletes delivered four memorable performances last week.

Two wrestlers from U-Prep and Foothill pinned opponents last Saturday. Shasta High's goalkeeper made key saves and a U-Prep basketball star hit a rare milestone in less then two seasons.

Here are the four Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week winners from games and matches between Jan. 30 and Feb. 4.

Jayda Johnson

School: Shasta

Sport: Soccer

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Johnson's performance last week allowed her to stand brightly and equal to the goals her teammates have been scoring. Last week she came up with several critical saves that helped Shasta tie Pleasant Valley 0-0 last Friday and beat Foothill last Wednesday.

Shasta ended its six match losing streak against Pleasant Valley dating back to 2019.

Johnson has been reliable whether its blocking shots and clearing the ball from the attacking zone. Last Friday marked Johnson's nine shutout. Shasta has won six of its last eight matches, including five straight results with either a win or tie.

Shasta (12-4-1, 6-2-1 EAL) hosts Enterprise (8-9-2, 1-7-1 EAL) in its final regular season match this Wednesday. Kickoff starts at 7 p.m.

School: U-Prep

Sport: Basketball

Class: Sophomore

Team contributions: Warren became the first U-Prep girls basketball player since 2016 to surpass 1,000 points for her career. Warren hit the milestone with 3:31 in the fourth quarter against West Valley. She drove down the left lane and was fouled as she scored to give U-Prep the lead 41-38. U-Prep (18-7, 6-2 NAL) plays its final two regular season games this week. Warren is one of only four U-Prep players to score at least 1,000 points.

The Panthers travel to Lassen on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and host Anderson Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Team contributions: Hernandez opened the CIF Northern Section wrestling postseason with impressive performances at the Eastern Athletic League Championships at Foothill High School. Hernandez won the 152-pound weight title. Hernandez will compete at the CIF Northern Section Division I Finals at Red Bluff High School this Saturday. Matches start at 10 a.m.

Class: Senior

Team contributions: Nasise ran through his weight class in dominant fashion at the Northern Athletic League Championships on Saturday at U-Prep. 115-pound Nasise won the first place match, pinning his opponent in 13 seconds. U-Prep hosts the CIF Northern Section Division II Championships this Saturday. Matches start at 10 a.m.
