Wrestling: Both Northern Iowa, Iowa State blast Utah Valley in Big 12 road matchups

Both the Northern Iowa and Iowa State wrestling programs pounded Utah Valley this weekend — as expected.

On Friday, the 17th-ranked Panthers beat the Wolverines, 34-9, in Orem, Utah. Northern Iowa is now 4-2 overall this season and 2-1 against Big 12 competition.

On Saturday, the sixth-ranked Cyclones got their shot and followed with a 31-9 win inside Lockhart Arena. Iowa State is now 10-2 overall this season and 3-0 against Big 12 foes.

Here are some quick takeaways from both results:

The Panthers won eight of 10 matches against the Wolverines, who are now 1-5 overall and 1-2 against the Big 12 after both losses. That included the first six for a 25-0 lead heading into the featured match at 174 pounds.

At 174, Demetrius Romero downed Iowa State's Lance Runyon, 7-4. Runyon, in just his third match of the year, led 3-1 after a first-period takedown, but Romero, an 8th-year senior and 2021 All-American who's ranked No. 7 nationally by InterMat, scored a takedown to tie it 3-3 entering the third, then iced it with another late takedown.

Northern Iowa punted at 197, so, really, the Panthers won eight of nine contested matches. Kyle Biscoglia (133), Colin Realbuto (149) and Parker Keckeisen (184) all recorded pins and Austin Yant (165) added a major decision. The Panthers totaled 24 takedowns in the nine contested matches.

Iowa State was just as dominant, even with an irregular lineup

The Cyclones utilized three reserve wrestlers against Utah Valley on Saturday night, starting Caleb Fuessley at 125, Drew Woodley at 141, and Carter Schmidt at 174. Those were the only three matches Iowa State lost in the dual.

The Cyclones rolled otherwise. Zach Redding (133), David Carr (165), and Marcus Coleman (184) all recorded first-period pins and Sam Schuyler (285) won by major. Jason Kraisser (157) added an overtime win and Paniro Johnson (149) and Yonger Bastida (197) both won close matches thanks to scoring early and defending late.

Both the Panthers and Cyclones have next weekend off, then return to action against No. 15 Oklahoma State and Oklahoma the weekend of Jan. 27-29. The schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, Jan. 27: Oklahoma at Iowa State, 7 p.m.

  • Saturday, Jan. 28: Oklahoma State at Northern Iowa, 7 p.m.

  • Sunday, Jan. 29: Oklahoma at Northern Iowa, 2 p.m.; Oklahoma State at Iowa State, 2 p.m.
