Wrestling: Champ Red Hook, Port Jervis send four to state D2 tourney

STONE RIDGE – Red Hook secured four individual champions and claimed the team title at the Section 9 Division 2 wrestling championships on Sunday at SUNY Ulster.

Ewan Celestine (118 pounds), Rian Kirker (126), Demetrius Massey (138) and Luke Daniels (285) all won titles for the Raiders, who fended off Saugerties 203-183.5 for top team honors.

Port Jervis, too, brought home four individual titles and placed third at 171 points. Champions for Port included Charlie Wylie (102), Rich O’Lena (110), Maddox McCormick (189) and junior Matt Oosterom (215). For Wiley, it was her second title in a row, the only female to win any sectional title. Ooseterom won the 7th vs. 8th placement match at the 2022 state D2 championships. McCormick, a sophomore, was the only non first or second seed to win a title, pinning Chester No. 2 seed Akil Williams in 2:29.

Additional titlists included Onteora’s Thomas Shields (132), New Paltz’s Justin Coiteux (145) and Cole Cuppett (152) and Chester’s Marcus Colon (172). Cuppett, a senior, is a repeat champion.

At 285, the top-seeded Daniels earned a pin with 47 seconds remaining, denying No. 2 Logan Ormond of New Paltz a bid for his second title in a row.

Only the 13 Division 2 champs advance to the state tournament in Albany.

Coiteux was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. The junior pinned Saugerties’ Isaiah Hockx in just 14 seconds in the 145 final. Coiteux repeated as champion.

The most exciting match finals award went to the 138 final between Massey and Saugerties’ Vance Dyke. Between fellow seniors, Massey earned a pin with 61 seconds left in the third period.

The championship round featured nine matchups of No. 1 seed vs. No. 2 with the top seed prevailing six times. Olena and Celestine and Shields were the second seeds won claimed victory.
