Wrestling: Highlights and first and third-place results for Districts 17, 18 and 19

The state’s 32 districts took place Saturday with the top three finishers in each district advancing to next Friday and Saturday’s regions. The top four finishers in each weight class earn berths to the state Individual Championships at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on March 2 to 4.

Here are the best local finishers that make up Region 5 in Districts, 17, 18 and 19. No MyCentralJersey area wrestlers qualified from District 20.

Results from the first- and third-place matches from each of the three districts follow the writeups.

District 17

Hillsborough and Hunterdon Central each crowned three champions with nine and 10 qualifiers, respectively, to lead the Skyland Conference at District 17.

Host Hunterdon Central had gold medalists in Anthony Rossi (113), Will Cella (138) and Rhett Washleski (144) and runners-up in Ryan Sherlock (106), Henry Wilkinson (150) and Thomas Brunetti (175). The Red Devils’ third-place finishers were Evan Thompson (132), Jacob Saus (157) and Patrick Kaczmarek (190).

Hillsborough’s winners were Peter Quandt (175), Joey Witcoski (190) and Christian Quandt (285).

Hillsborough’s other finalists were Zach Iannucci (120), Chris Spinelli (138), Jack Miller (165) and Matt Jones (215). The Raiders’ lower weights qualified for Region 5 with third-place finishes in Logan McDermid (106), Tommy Kester (113) and Corey Iannucci (126).

District 18

North Brunswick crowned two champions, while East Brunswick and South Brunswick each had six region qualifiers to lead the Greater Middlesex Conference entries.

North Brunswick’s Omar Elhomossy (138) and Willie Wilson (165) claimed titles with teammate Jomar Mena (165) taking third.

East Brunswick’s Aedan Samson-Huggins (126) claimed a gold medal. The Bears other qualifiers were runners-up Dominick Lezark (106), Jake Gujski (113) and George Crostewitz (144) and third-place finishers Yisreal Thomas (175) and Ben Erlich (215).

South Brunswick had runners-ups in Michael Kurilla (150), Shahnawaz Asif (157) and Adam Derbala (285). The Vikings’ third-place finishers were Garv Sen (120), Brandon Castro (132) and Mustafa Oudeh (144).

New Brunswick’s Yasir Johnson (215) topped the podium and South River’s Joseph Lepore (132) placed second.

District 19

St. Joseph-Metuchen advanced 12 wrestlers to Region 5 and repeated as team champions with 266 points, ahead of second-place Old Bridge’s 199.5. The Falcons champions included Zach Beadling (120), Morgan Schwarz (126), Giovanni Alejandro (138), Tyler Whitford (144), Evan Mendez (150), Jake Zargo (165), Brian Christie (190) and Jake Tulli (285).

Schwarz, a freshman No. 3 seed at 126, got by Old Bridge’s Jesse Koczon 2-0 in the semifinals and then edged top-seeded Julian Dawson in a 19-14 decision. The two met in the GMCT semifinals with Dawson prevailing 13-9 in another high-scoring match.

At 150, Mendez won a high-level meeting with a 3-1 win over Metuchen state qualifier Francesco Rossiter. At heavyweight, Tulli got by Piscataway’s Malachi Wyatt 3-0 in a rematch of the GMCT final won by Tulli by a rideout in the ultimate tie-breaker.

Old Bridge’s Tyler Sagi (157) and Logan Roman (113) continued their dominance with big wins in the final.

Piscataway’s Brian Butler also won at 132 with a major decision.
