Wrestling rewind: Holland tops Zeeland West; Chix split

HOLLAND - The Holland wrestling team hosted its first quad of the year and ended the night with two wins.

Holland improved its conference record to 2-0 by defeating Zeeland West 48-26. The Dutch then defeated West Catholic 58-24 in the second dual of the night. The Holland Grapplers have improved their record to 8 -1 on the year.

Getting two wins for the Dutch were Allesandro Fillmore, Romeo Keels, Luis Barajas, Israel Castro, Julian Segovia, and Aiden Segovia. Going 1-0 for the varsity tonight was Joel Morin.

In the second round the Dux defeated Unity Christian 55–24.

Going undefeated on the night for Zeeland West were Kham Phothisan, Justin Sanchez, Seth Frye, Nate Machiele, and Brody Smeyers.

Going 1-1 were Sam Taylor, Austin Ulberg, Izaac Overweg, Noah Quick, Gerrit Hartman, and Evan Walters.

Zeeland East splits matches

Zeeland East Wrestling traveled to Coopersville tonight to face Reeths-Puffer in conference action and host Coopersville in the cross-over. East beat Puffer 42-31 with a plethora of exciting individual matches. East started strong with wins by Devin Steggerda by pin at 190, Atari Kuras at 215 winning in overtime, and Parker Williams at heavyweight by pin.

East continued their winning ways with pins by Tommy Le at 106 and Eric Segocia-Estupinan at 113. A great matchup for the night was at 126 with East's Gavin Drenten against Puffer's Ian Cook, who placed 3rd in State last year. Gavin beat Ian 7-0. The next match was just as exciting with Angel Hernandez upsetting Puffer's Andrew Corradin by pin at 132. East's Tate Salas wrapped up the night with a forfeit.

East then faced off against host Coopersville and fell 24-54.

Undefeated wrestlers on the night for East were Gavin Drenten at 126, Atari Kuras at 215, and Parker Williams at 285.

West Ottawa drops two

Plagued with injuries and illness, the Panthers dropped two matches on Wednesday at Greenville. Round one West Ottawa lost to Reed City 33-48 and lost next round to the host Yellow Jackets 15-62. 2-0 on the night were (157) Owen Foster and (120) Payton VanBuskirk. Both Payton and Owen extend their win records to 8-0 on the season.

"We just need to get healthy. That is the most important step right now as a team. This team is competitive and we are proud of all the underclassmen willing to step up for us. As a coach, we teach our athletes to never back down from a challenge and we can take some pride in that tonight," West Ottawa coach Ryan Lancaster said.
