Wrestling: Roe improves to 21-0

Jan. 11—St. Helens took the team title last Saturday in Seaside, where the Gulls hosted their annual Pac Rim Armed Forces wrestling tournament.

The Lions had 229 points, with Estacada (174) a distant second. Astoria (90) was seventh, followed by Knappa (ninth, 68.5) and Seaside (11th, six points).

Astoria's Gunnar Olson took first at 145 pounds, winning his first two matches by fall, followed by a 9-6 decision over Estacada's Tucker Jackson in the semifinals. Olson won the final by injury default.

Astoria's Matt Evans took the title at 285, where he scored an 8-6 decision over teammate Will Hofmann in the final. Henry Davis was third at 195.

Corbin Roe was Knappa's lone champion. Roe won by fall in the quarterfinals and semifinals, then scored a 10-4 decision over Estacada's Nehemiah Gaul in the championship.

Roe improved to 21-0 on the season, with pins over every opponent except Gaul. Roe's two pins Saturday tied the school record for consecutive pins, before Gaul went the distance with Roe in the final.

Roe is now nine victories way from the school record for consecutive wins, and 13 wins away for most in a single season, currently held by John Benthin in 2007-08.
