Wrestling roundup: Willmar Cardinals cap off Kiffmeyer Duals in 3rd place

Jan. 15—ST. CLOUD — The Willmar wrestling team finished third at the eight-team Kiffmeyer Duals at St. Cloud Tech High School.

The Cardinals opened with a 51-18 win over Foley. In the semis, they fell to eventual champion New Prague, 35-32. Then in the third-place match, Willmar wrapped up with a 46-18 win against Cambridge-Isanti.

In the opener against the Falcons, Lawson Anez (113 pounds), Conlan Carlson (138), Cameren Champagne (145), Braeden Erickson (170), Steven Cruze (182) and Daunte Castellano (285) each won by fall. Sully Anez also got a tech fall for the Cardinals at 132. Foley is in the Lean and Mean rankings in Class A.

The next round had Willmar against New Prague, which is ranked second in Class AA and has four top-ranked wrestlers: Lawson Eller (106); Koy Buesgens (145); Colton Bornholdt (152) and Joey Novak (195). The biggest win for Willmar came at 170 as Erickson won a 4-3 decision against Brady Westall. Westall is ranked fifth in Class AA while Erickson is seventh in AAA. Cavin Carlson (120) and Steven Cruze (182) won by fall for the Cardinals.

In the third-place match, Erickson got his second ranked win of the day, beating C-I's Treyton Byers in a 3-2 decision. Byers is fourth at 170 in AAA. Cavin Carlson secured another ranked win at 120 with an 8-4 decision over Leo Edblad. Edblad is third in AAA at 113 while Cavin is sixth in AAA at 120. Lawson Anez (113), Sully Anez (132) and Conlan Carlson (138) scored falls while Steven Cruze (182) had a tech fall.

Willmar competes in a Central Lakes Conference triangular at 5 p.m. Thursday against Fergus Falls and Rocori at Cold Spring.

Trey Gunderson and Masyn Olson won their respective brackets for Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at the Big Ole at Alexandria High School.

The Fighting Saints finished fourth in the eight-team tournament with 161 points. Minneota, a fellow Section 5A team, won with 201.5.

In the 120-pound finals, Gunderson won a 7-2 decision over Annandale/Maple Lake's Xavier Jones. At 195, Olson clinched the title with a 9-2 decision over Alexandria's Cody Vatnsdal.
