Wriggelsworth announces run for third term as sheriff

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth has filed for candidacy and has announced his intention to run in 2024 for a third term as sheriff.

Wriggelsworth, a Democrat first elected to the sheriff’s office in 2016, made the official announcement Friday.

“2024 marks my 31st year in law enforcement,” Wriggelsworth said.

Wriggelsworth is the only person so far to have filed to run for Ingham County Sheriff in the Aug. 6 primary election, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said in an email.

Byrum said the deadline to file for the Aug. 6 primary election is April 23 at 4 p.m.

Wriggelsworth said in his campaign announcement that the sheriff’s office staff remain committed to “victim-centered approaches to protect our community,” including “cutting-edge strategies within the correctional setting,” “behavioral health and co-occurring substance use treatments,” and “several evidence-based programming and educational opportunities, quality health care, food service, and communications.”

The sheriff has worked closely with the Mid-Michigan Police Academy at Lansing Community College, advocating that corrections officers can become some of the best police officers.

During his second term, Wriggelsworth also worked to gather elected officials opposing former Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon’s controversial policy to limit felony firearms charges.
