Finding Land Ho! recipe for kale soup

Dear Write to Know: Can you please publish the Land Ho’s recipe for Kale Soup? I have misplaced my copy. Thanks

J.G., South Orleans

Dear J.G.: We were unable to find this recipe in our archives; however, we did find a mention of it in a 2009 Cape Cod Times article, “Cooking Up History,” by Laurie Higgins. The Land Ho recipe for kale soup is printed in Ann Pieroway’s cookbook, "Taste and Tales of Cape Cod and the Islands." At the time she was writing her cookbook, she invited head chefs and restaurant owners around the Cape to submit their favorite recipes. Pieroway has published several cookbooks that combine her two favorite hobbies of history and cooking. The book is available on Amazon and at the Wheldon Library in West Barnstable according to the CLAMS library system. You can also buy the book directly from www.basspondpress.com (you will be redirected to www.tasteandtales.com).

Looking to keep bird from banging window

Dear Write to Know: I have a Cardinal trying to break into the windows right now. Last year. And at least the year before. Any suggestions as to what to do to the windows inside or out?

I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

E.L., Roxbury, CT

Dear E.L.: We checked with worldbirds.com and found some handy tips for this troublesome problem. Since birds are attracted to their reflection in your windows, you can try using bird tape on windows. This is a long-lasting tape that lets birds know there’s a barrier. It lets light in and doesn’t detract from outside views. You can also apply decals, sun catchers, mylar strips, etc. These must cover most of the glass to be effective. You can also use sunshades or awnings. Another tip is to move bird feeders and bird baths to a new location. You can also install external shutters or cover windows with tempera paint (poster paint) or soap. If our readers have tried other methods to keep birds from flying into windows, we would love to hear from you.

Seeking repair for older printer

Dear Write to Know: I purchased an Epson Stylus Photo R2400 Printer in 2006, which has served me well, until now. SMH Electronics in Wareham has serviced it over the years but say they can no longer do so since parts are no longer available. Before I discard it, I want to make one more attempt to have it repaired. Is there anyone on the Cape who has the facility to bring this valued machine back to usefulness? Please email me at kettle9115@mypacks.net.

V.M., Orleans

Dear V.M.: We hope you receive some emails. Good luck!
