The 5th annual African American Read-In at the Hesperia Branch Library on Feb. 20 will feature the sharing of literary contributions from African Americans, organizers said.

Members of the High Desert Branch of the California Writers Club will host the read-in with T. Faye Griffin as emcee.

Griffin is a three-time NAACP Award winner, producer, best-selling author, visual artist, and Regional Programs Director for the Arts Connection, the Arts Council of the High Desert.

With a career of more than 30 years in television, film, radio, and theater, Griffin has amassed an impressive list of credits, including the Emmy Award-winning comedy series " In Living Color."

During the read-in, members and guests will read 3- to 5-minute poems, passages, or condensed biographies. Others may sing a song by an African American composer or read a short scene from a play or movie.

Previously, the HDCWC has hosted readings of writers such as Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Toni Morrison. The public can come early to sign up for a remaining spot.

The National African American Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.

This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants worldwide in the groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering African American books and authors.

The African American Read-In is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Hesperia Library Community Room, 9650 Seventh Avenue.

The HDCWC is an active branch of the century-old non-profit with over 2,000 members statewide.

The HDCWC meets monthly. Admission is free, and the public is welcome to attend. For further information about the HDCWC, visit hdcwc.com or call 760.221.6367.
