Wrong-way crash killed parents raising 4 kids. Now man is arrested, Illinois cops say

A driver has been arrested weeks after a husband and wife were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 55 in Illinois, state police say.

Michael Trinka, 33, faces 12 counts of aggravated driving under the influence following the June 27 crash in Will County, Illinois State Police said in a Wednesday, July 12, news release.

Trinka was driving his Ford F-150 the wrong direction when he struck a GMC Yukon, which was then struck by a semi, according to state police.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the Yukon, identified as Ron Dube, 35, and Kelly Dube, 34, were pronounced dead at the scene. Married since 2010, the couple had four children, according to an obituary.

Three of their children were in the SUV and received non-life-threatening injuries, state police said. The Dubes had just dropped off their oldest child at a sleepover, WLS reported.

“Now these kids don’t have a parent. My four grandchildren do not have a parent anymore,” Ron Dube Sr. told WMAQ.

Tinka also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken into custody Wednesday and jailed on a $3 million bond, according to state police.

An obituary states the Dubes, of Emington, were “raising a young family with love, lessons and the core values they both subscribed to as parents.”

“Kelly and (Ron’s) personalities were so different but they fit together so perfectly,” according to the obituary. “They were the most loving and caring people you could meet.”
