Wrong-way crash kills two drivers on Interstate 87 in Tuxedo

Tuxedo ‒ Two drivers were killed in a wrong-way crash on the Thruway early Tuesday, state police said.

George Gonzalez was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87, where he smashed into a southbound vehicle head-on around 1 a.m., police said.

Gonzalez and the other driver, Chester resident Yehuda Weinstock, both died at the scene.

The crash took place in Tuxedo, between Exit 16 for Harriman and Exit 15A for Sloatsburg.

Police said Gonzalez, a 68-year-old resident of Dumont, New Jersey, was driving a 2017 Toyota Rav-4. They said he appears to have entered the Thruway from Route 17 in New Jersey.

Gonzalez drove into the path of Weinstock, 67, who was driving a 2022 Nissan Altima. The collision caused the Toyota to become engulfed in flames.

Gonzalez and Weinstock were the only people in the two cars.

The southbound lanes were shut down until shortly before 7 a.m. while the crash was investigated.
