Wrong-way driver crashes into Florida Highway Patrol car

A 23-year-old man was driving the wrong way on I-275 near Tampa when he collided into a Florida Highway Patrol car early Saturday morning, FHP said.

Troopers received reports of the wrong-way driver, Adonis Adames, and converged to the area as the driver proceeded northbound, entering I-75 and continuing northbound in the southbound lanes, FHP said.

Near mile post 276, north of State Road 56, a trooper intercepted a red 2021 Toyota Camry by positioning his vehicle in the path of the wrong-way driver, FHP said. Adames failed to evade the trooper and collided with the left side of the patrol car.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Adames suffered no injuries and was later arrested for driving in the wrong direction and a DUI after providing a breath sample of 0.148. The legal limit is .08.
