Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash near DeLand, 1 injured

A 60-year-old Barberville man driving in the wrong direction in the south lane of Spring Garden Avenue near DeLand was killed Sunday night when he crashed with another vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at 9:07 p.m. at Spring Garden Avenue and Glenwood Road, troopers said.

The Barberville man in his 2002 Ford Crown Victoria was traveling north in the south lane of Spring Garden Avenue and collided head-on with a 2019 Nissan Rogue that was headed south on Spring Garden Avenue, troopers said.

The Nissan flipped on its left side after it was struck by the Crown Victoria, said Trooper Migdalisis Garcia.

Debris from the crash also struck another vehicle, a 2015 Nissan Altima, Garcia said.

The driver of the Ford Crown Victoria, the 60-year-old Barberville man, died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Nissan Rogue, a 42-year-old DeLand woman suffered critical injuries and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, troopers said.

The driver of the Nissan Altima was not injured.

Garcia said the crash remains under investigation.
