Wrong-way driver, other victims identified in Augusta County crash that killed three

AUGUSTA COUNTY — Three people killed Monday afternoon in a crash on Interstate 81 have been identified by Virginia State Police.

On Monday shortly before 1:30 p.m., police said a Pennsylvania man behind the wheel of a 2000 Honda Accord was headed north in the southbound lanes when he hit a Chevrolet GMT400 truck head-on, a press release said.

The crash took place at the 208 mile marker on I-81. Police said the impact sent both vehicles in opposite directions.

The driver of the Honda, Ronald E. Trick Jr., 59, of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the pickup, William K. Burns, 51, of Clifton Forge, also died at the scene, police said. Sandra K. Burns, 55, of Clifton Forge, died on the way to the hospital. Both victims in the pickup were wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation. As this point in the probe, state police do not know how the Pennsylvania man ended up driving in the wrong direction on the interstate, the release said.
