WT Briefs: Kelley-Lusk named Ron Lenz National POY, Harris named First Team All-American

CANYON — Hannah Kelley-Lusk was named the 2021 Ron Lenz Division II Conference Commissioners Association Women's Soccer Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The senior forward was also named First Team D2CCA All-American and first team United Soccer Coaches All-South Central Region.

Kelley-Lusk, the nation's leading scorer, finished her senior campaign with a record-breaking 26 goals to rank first in the WT's single-season goals leaderboard.

The Farmington, New Mexico native also ranked first in four other offensive categories: total points (62), goals per game (1.44), points per game (3.44), and shots on goal per game (3.28).

She was named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, Academic Player of the Year and Forward of the Year — becoming the first player in league history to earn three specialty awards in the same season. The senior was also tabbed as the D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year while also earning USC National Player of the Week honors twice this season.

West Texas A&M Football

Tobias Harris was named an American Football Coaches Association First Team All-American on Wednesday.

It marks the second time that Harris has claimed AFCA First Team All-America accolades after being honored as a return specialist in 2019. The Pflugerville product also picked up First Team All-Region and First Team All-Lone Star Conference accolades during his junior campaign.

Harris finished the season with 40 total tackles (23 solo) to go along with six interceptions, 0.5 sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups. Harris has 16 career interceptions and ranks second all-time at West Texas A&M. He returned two of his interceptions in 2021 for touchdowns.

Four members of West Texas A&M men's soccer team were honored for their efforts on the pitch as they were named All-South Central Region by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

Giancarlo Saldana and Chris Palomino moved on to the All-American ballot after earning First Team honors while Anthony Perea and Rotem Weiss each received Second Team accolades.

Torrey Miller and Chandler Vogel each picked up their second AVCA All-American accolades on Tuesday afternoon.

Miller is currently 15th in the nation in kills per set (4.08) while compiling 5.0 kills per set during the NCAA Tournament. The Brownwood product put on a historic performance in the South Central Regional Championship match where she registered a career-high 33 kills, becoming just the eighth Lady Buff in program history to reach the mark.

Vogel will go down in the record books as one of best liberos to take the court for the Lady Buffs. The Hereford native was named the Lone Star Conference's Libero of the Year, becoming the first player in league history to earn any individual award four consecutive years. With her 78 digs from the regional tournament, the senior now has totaled 2,659 career digs which ranks third for current active Division II players.

West Texas A&M Women's basketball

LUBBOCK — The Lady Buffs faced off with their fourth ranked opponent of the season on Tuesday night, fighting for 40 minutes against the No. 2 Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps before falling 60-49 in non-conference regional action as LCU claims their 94th straight victory inside of the Rip Griffin Center.

Alivia Lewis paced the WT offense, netting a team-high 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and a steal. Karley Motschenbacher finished the night with nine points while grabbing seven boards and registering five steals.

Ashton Duncan led the way for the Lady Chaps as she went 8-of-15 from the field including 4-of-10 from deep to finish with a game-high 20 points followed by Juliana Robertson with 11 to go along with 15 boards for a double-double.

West Texas A&M men's basketball

West Texas A&M men's basketball moved to fourth in the third regular season National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 rankings announced on Tuesday.

Lubbock Christian remained atop the rankings with 14 first-place votes followed by Northwest Missouri State (two first-place votes) and Mercyhurst. WT moved up a spot to fourth with Nova Southeastern in fifth followed by Indiana, Chico State, Augusta, Queens and West Liberty to round out the Top 10.
