WT Briefs: Lady Buffs game postponed, baseball adds another commit

CANYON — West Texas A&M has announced that due to health and safety protocols, Thursday night’s women’s basketball contest against Angelo State has been postponed, per a news release.

The men’s game between the Buffs and Rams is still scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A makeup date between the Lady Buffs and Belles will be announced upon mutual agreement by both schools.

Baseball

Head baseball coach Matt Vanderburg announced the addition of El Paso catcher Beto Fraire for the 2023 campaign.

Fraire joins the Buffs from El Paso Community College, where he played catcher and the outfield for the Tejanos under head coach Julian Soucey. He began his collegiate career at Otero Junior College, hitting .328 in two seasons with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 53 RBI with a slugging percentage of .587 for the Rattlers.

Beto was a First Team All-District selection on the diamond for the Eastwood High School Troopers under head coach Ryan Medrano, hitting .361 with eight home runs to go along with 10 stolen bases as a senior.

Awards

West Texas A&M Athletics announced the three Legacy Award recipients who will be recognized as part of the Hall of Champions Weekend on Feb. 11-12.

This year’s Legacy Award honorees are Fairly Group, Pak-A-Sak and Jim & Peggy Pollard.

The Legacy Award, established in 2008, recognizes individuals and organizations who have made significant lifetime contributions to the success and legacy of West Texas A&M Athletics.

The Legacy Award winners will be recognized alongside the Hall of Champions Class of 2021 during the Induction Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. 11 at Legacy Hall inside of the Jack B. Kelley Student Center.

Legacy Award winners and the Class of 2021 inductees will also be honored during the Lone Star Conference basketball doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 12th at the First United Bank Center.

The Hall of Champions Class of 2021 includes Tim Dubrule (Baseball), Renee Erwin (Softball), Paul Hart (Men’s Soccer), Emma Love (Cross Country/Track), Mickey Piersall (Men’s Golf), Brad Stark (Public Address) and Chontiquah White (Women’s Basketball).
