WT Briefs: Women's golf finish seventh in AZ, Bajika wins 5,000 at Masked Rider Open

The No. 10 Lady Buffs finished seventh at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic hosted by Western New Mexico at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.

The Lady Buffs carded a 602 (304-298) score for the 36-hole tournament and were led by freshman Gam Songprasert.

Northeastern State picked up the team victory after firing 290 (+2) on the final day in Arizona to finish with a score of 588. Cal State Monterey Bay finished second (+14) followed by Cal State East Bay (+18), Colorado Christian (+19), and UT Tyler (+21) to round out the top five.

Songprasert tied for second with Cal State East Bay's Jasmin Krishna, shooting 1-under 143. The freshman recorded a pair of birdies on the first and 14th hole with a total of 12 pars and three bogeys.

Rylie Cook played as an individual and finished fourth after firing 1-under 71 in the final round to jump ahead nine spots. The sophomore collected six birdies in the final round including four on the back nine.

Antonella Periotti Omisolo (+8) tied for 38th and was followed by Lorenza Perini (+9), Hannah Rossmanith (+11) and Alyssa Campbell (+14).

Softball

The No. 20 Lady Buffs dropped two games in Sunday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader against No. 22 Oklahoma Christian. WT dropped to 21-12 overall (10-10 LSC) while the Eagles improved to 28-8 (16-4 LSC).

Oklahoma Christian's Lindsey Stoeckel (6-0) was awarded the victory in the first game after stepping on the mound in the third inning. The right-handed pitcher allowed just two hits through 4 2/3 innings with no runs and three strikeouts. Heidi Vortherms (9-5) received the loss allowing three runs (one earned) through 5 2/3 innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

Ruby Salzman and Gabriella Valforte each recorded a pair of hits at the plate to lead WT while Julie Guzman recorded a season-high three RBI.

Oklahoma Christian attacked early in the second game as the Eagles used five hits to jump out to an 8-0 lead in the second.

The Eagles would score four runs in the seventh before holding WT, securing a 12-2 victory to take the series.

Grace Anderson (10-2) received the victory allowing two runs (both earned) with eight hits, three walks and one strikeout. Emilee Wilson (6-3) was credited the loss allowing five runs (five earned) on four hits through 1 1/3 innings.

Baseball

The No. 5 Buffaloes scored nine unanswered runs to close out a Lone Star Conference weekend series with a 12-4 victory over the No. 19 Lubbock Christian Chaps on Sunday afternoon at Wilder Park in Canyon.

WT took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth as Will Fuenning led off the frame with a solo home run the other way to right field. LCU looked to answer in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out but Colton Charnholm got out of the frame with a pair of big strikeouts to keep it 5-4.

The Buffs added to their lead in the seventh as Kennedy Badgett scored on a misplayed ball in the outfield with no outs followed later in the frame by a Nollan Koon two-run double to the gap in left center. WT wasn't done yet as Wittmann singled up the middle to score Bryant Bailey for the 9-4 lead.

WT added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Bailey singled to right to score Ortiz followed by an Izaiah Madrid RBI single and another LCU error that extended the lead to 12-4.

Charmholm picked up the win (7-2) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in his 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Track and Field

WT's Betty Bajika won the 5,000-meter race on Saturday afternoon at the Masked Rider Open in Lubbock at the Texas Tech Fuller Track & Field Complex.

Taylor Mixon finished eighth in discus with a personal best 128-7.0 (39.21m) before she returned to toss 134-4.0 (40.95m) in the hammer throw. Zada Swoopes placed third in the hammer with the school's third-best mark of 177-9.0 (54.18m).

Joey Zimmerman finished sixth in the women's pole vault at 11-0.25 (3.36m) followed by Jayna Lueders in ninth with a clearance of 10-0.5 (3.06m).

Hekla Sif Magnusdottir finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 38-9.5 (11.82m) followed by Stefani Vasileva in ninth (11.57m). The duo returned for the long jump where Daniela Pesic finished seventh with a personal-best 18-11.75 (5.78m) with Vasileva and Sif Magnusdottir in 14th and 16th.

Tiana Melton finished 14th in the 400-meter dash (1:00.04) with Makayla Thomas closely behind in 16th (1:00.71).

Cheyann Shadden placed 11th in the 400-meter hurdles while Kara Stout finished 20th in the 100 with a time of 12.86.

On the mens' side, Jahmaal Wilson picked up a provisional mark as the top finisher for the Buffs in the 110m hurdles. The sophomore placed second behind Tyrin Lewis. Wilson ran 13.99 with Christian Marshall running 14.65 to come in 12th followed by Traise Cain (14.89) and Gerard Bryant (15.64).

Luke Holcombe finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 48-8.75 (14.85m) followed by Jon Tucker in eighth (13.49m).

Gabe Imery led the Buffs in the pole vault after clearing 14-5.5 (4.38m) to place ninth while Dawson and Dylan Gilliam finished 10th and 11th.

Peniel Richard finished fourth in the triple jump with mark of 48-0.25 (14.65m) with Sifiso Miya placing seventh and Hunter Warminski in 11th.

Jeremiah Lauzon grabbed a provisional mark in the 100 with a time of 10.36 to place fourth with the fourth-fastest time in D-II.

Briggs Wittlake (15:23.13) and Gustavo Posada (15:24.76) finished fourth and fifth in the 5,000.
