WT Briefs: Women's golf team punches ticket to NCAA D-II National Championship

The No. 11 West Texas A&M women's golf team earned a berth to the NCAA Division II National Championship with their fifth-place finish at the West Regional Tournament. This is the Lady Buffs sixth appearance overall and first since 2019.

West Texas A&M's Gam Songprasert finished second overall (-6) to Faith Kilgore of Colorado Christian. She finished the tournament second with a total of 13 birdies.

The Lady Buffs scored a 291 (+3) in the final round on Wednesday to finish fifth. WT finished 19-over 883 (295-297-291) at the Par 72 Brookside Country Club.

Junior Alyssa Campbell finished second for the Lady Buffs and tied for 27th overall, shooting 225 (+9). Rylie Cook and Lorenza Perini tied for 29th with a 226 (+10) followed by Antonella Periotti Omisolo tied at 38th with a 229 (+13).

Softball

The Lady Buffs had five student-athletes earn Lone Star Conference postseason accolades on Wednesday night.

Ruby Salzman was selected to the All-Conference first team for the third straight year. Salzman is joined on the first team by Brittni Rufus and Diana Murtha while Heidi Vortherms was named to the league's second team.

Sophomore first baseman Gabriella Valforte was named to third team All-LSC while Rufus picked up Golden Glove honors and Vortherms was named to the all-freshman Team.

The Lady Buffs will make their 13th straight appearance in the Lone Star Conference Tournament this weekend.

West Texas A&M Director of Athletics Michael McBroom has announced the hiring of Thompson Mayberry as the new Associate Athletic Director for Corporate Relations.

Mayberry will be responsible for developing partnerships with local, regional and national companies united in supporting West Texas A&M University Athletics.

"Thompson Mayberry brings a wealth of experience and a passion for WT Athletics that makes him an ideal addition to our staff," McBroom said. "As we envisioned what our corporate partner program should look like in the future, Thompson's experience, relationships, vision and perspective as a former student-athlete will accelerate our growth in this important area."

Mayberry was raised in Dimmitt and was a four-year letter winner as a defensive back for the Buffaloes from 1978-1982. He was a part of the Missouri Valley Conference championship team in 1979. He graduated from WT with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing in 1982.

"I'm thankful for this wonderful opportunity to be a part of the university that assisted in shaping the early days of my career," Mayberry said. "I'm also grateful to be able use my business development experience at this state-of-the-art campus and give back to the athletic program that helps shape the character of WT student-athletes."

Mayberry joins the WT Athletics staff with over twenty years of sales experience. He has strong professional relationships across the Texas Panhandle with recognized success in sales development. He began his career with Southwestern Public Service Company (now Xcel Energy) and subsequently held roles at Xerox Services, Ingenix and Corporate Systems. He most recently served as Vice President of Sales at OccuNet.
