COLLEGE FOOTBALL

LONE STAR CONFERENCE

ANGELO STATE 34 WEST TEXAS A&M 14

What this game means: After looking strong in their 2-0 start to the season, the Buffs have now dropped two straight and are back to .500 on the season. While this one was always going to be tough (ASU is ranked fourth in DII), what's disappointing is that WT was actually ahead at halftime 7-6. The Buffs pulled back within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter only to lose by three.

Game highlights: WT held ASU to a pair of field goals in the first quarter before going ahead in the second on a 25-yard touchdown run by quarterback Nick Gerber. Angelo State seemed to wake up in the second half as Kyle Bradford hit Zach Bronkhorst for a seven-yard touchdown early in the third to make it 13-7. Nate Omayebu III extended it to 20-7 on a two-yard scoring run 94 seconds before the fourth. Shakell Brown cut the deficit to 20-14 with a two-yard plunge early in the fourth, but Kason Phillips responded with a 24-yard touchdown scamper midway through the fourth to return the lead to 13. ASU gave the game its final score on when Andrew Pitts returned an interception 89 yards for a score with 1:48 to go.

Stars of the game: Noah Bogardus hauled in three catches for 71 yards while Jarrod Compton rushed for 61 yards on 15 carries on offense for the Buffs. Ty Dillon had six tackles and an interception while Carson Otworth had six tackles and three pass breakups.

Up next: WT will look to bounce back this week at home against UT Permian Basin. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium.
