WT Sports Briefs: Alyssa Campbell named LSC Women's Golfer of the Week

After leading the West Texas A&M women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Shark Shootout hosted by Hawaii Pacific, the Lone Star Conference named Alyssa Campbell the LSC Women's Golfer of the Week. Campbell fired two-under par (70) in the first round of the tournament, collecting three birdies and an eagle along the way. The senior returned to the course on Wednesday where she sunk four birdies in a six-hole span. Campbell ended the second round with a score of one-under (71) to move into second in the individual standings. The Lancaster, South Carolina native's performance allowed the Lady Buffs to jump up five spots from their first day positioning. Campbell was one of just three individuals to record an eagle and one of two to shoot under par in both rounds.

Women's Basketball

The Lady Buffs held their own against a perennial national power Thursday before falling 86-63 to the Arizona Wildcats in exhibition action at the McKale Center in Tucson, Arizona. Karley Motschenbacher led the way for the Lady Buffs as the sophomore guard finished the night going 6-of-10 from the floor including 1-of-1 from behind the arc for a team-high 15 points to go along with eight board to finish just shy of a double-double. Zamorye Roberts also finished in double-figures as the senior from Portales went 4-of-7 from the floor and 2-of-4 from deep for 11 points to go along with two rebounds, three assists and a steal. The Lady Buffs finished the night going 25-of-56 (44.6%) from the floor including 7-of-15 (46.7%) from deep and 6-of-10 (60%) from the charity stripe to go along with 38 rebounds (eight offensive, 30 defensive), 11 assists, 25 turnovers, one block and four steals.

Softball

Head coach Michael Mook and the West Texas A&M softball team announced their Lone Star Conference schedule for the 2023 season last Thursday. The Lone Star Conference returns to a three-game series this season as the Lady Buffs host seven opponents at Schaeffer Park. WT starts LSC play on the road against Angelo State with a single game Feb. 17 followed by a doubleheader Feb.18. Following the matchup with the Rambelles, the Lady Buffs host UT Permian Basin for their LSC home opener on Feb. 25-26. On March 3-4, WT travels to Tyler for a series with UT Tyler. In midweek action, the Lady Buffs host the Mustangs of Midwestern State on March 7-8 before traveling to Texas Woman's over the weekend (March 11-12). WT returns to Schaeffer Park to host Oklahoma Christian for a weekend series (March 18-19) before going to Portales, New Mexico to play Eastern New Mexico on March 21-22. Texas A&M-Kingsville comes to Canyon for a series on March 25-26. The Lady Buffs end March and begin April against St. Mary's (March 31-April 1) in San Antonio. Coming from Silver City, Western New Mexico (April 6-7) visits Schaeffer Park on Easter weekend. The Lady Buffs play their last midweek series of the season against St. Edward's when WT visits Austin on April 11-12. Two of the three final series for the Lady Buffs take place in Canyon as Texas A&M International plays WT on April 15-16. Following that series, the Lady Buffs travel down I-27 to face Lubbock Christian (April 21-22) for their final road trip of the season. WT ends the regular season at home on April 28-29 when it hosts the Cameron Aggies.
