WT sweeps LCU in key conference series

Madison Johnson slugged a pair of two-run homers and Emilee Boyer also drove in four runs as No. 12 West Texas A&M run-ruled No. 16 Lubbock Christian University 12-2 in five innings Saturday to sweep a three-game Lone Star Conference softball series at Maner Park.

Boyer hit an RBI single in the first inning and a three-run homer in a five-run second that ended with West Texas A&M leading 7-0.

Starting pitcher Maxine Valdez (15-3) took the loss, giving up nine runs on eight hits and four walks.

West Texas A&M (43-5, 34-5) firmed up its hold on second place in the conference behind No. 3 UT Tyler (46-4, 34-2). LCU (36-14, 26-13) dropped from sole possession of third when the series started to tied for third with (31-14, 26-13).

The Lady Chaparrals dodged a shutout in the fourth inning when Ally Oyanguren singled scored on a wild pitch and Berkeley Quinn hit an RBI single.

WT won the late game of Friday's doubleheader 6-5 with the help of two-run singles from Braeland Booth.

Kasey Flores and Oyanguren hit two-run homers for LCU, and Amanda Valdiviezo delivered a solo shot.

Carson Ogilvie, Eduardo Acosta and Ryan Ball drove in two runs apiece and Ryan Markwardt pitched a complete game as Lubbock Christian University beat West Texas A&M 12-3 in the opener of a Lone Star Conference four-game series Friday night at Hays Field.

Ogilvie, Brevin McCool and Acosta had two hits apiece for the Chaparrals. Markwardt (6-4) walked three, struck out three and scattered seven hits.

West Texas A&M (28-16, 26-16) and LCU (26-18, 24-18) were scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday and the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
