WTA roundup: Weather creates mess in France, Germany

Sixth-seeded Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska picked up her first win on clay of the season on Monday, defeating France's Pauline Parmentier 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg in France.

With weather preventing every match from completing Monday, and some seeded players having played Sunday, Yastremska was the only seeded player to advance Monday.

Another French player, Chloe Paquet, knocked off fifth-seeded American Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3 in the day's biggest upset. Eighth-seeded Shuai Zhang of China also fell victim to an upset, losing to unseeded Australian Astra Sharma 6-4, 6-1.

Top-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia opens her tournament on Tuesday, taking on compatriot Daria Gavrilova.

As bad as the weather was in France, it was even worse in Germany, where only four matches began, and only one was completed.

German Mona Barthel needed an hour, 47 minutes but took care of Argentinian Paula Ormaechea 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. She will next play top-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, who won her first-round match on Sunday.

Among the players whose matches were suspended was American Alison Riske, who lost her first set to Serbia's Nina Stojanovic 7-6 (6) but was leading the second set 3-2 and up a break when play was halted.
