The Illinois Attorney General's Office is investigating Peoria's WTVP public television station following the station's finding that there had been "questionable, improper, unauthorized" internal spending.

WTVP said in a statement it is cooperating with the attorney general's office.

The station has also filed a report with the Peoria Police Department regarding the questionable spending and says it is also cooperating with that investigation.

WTVP slashed its budget by $1.5 million and laid off nine employees in October, following the revelation there had been unauthorized spending within the station. The station paused publication of Peoria Magazine, which it owns and operates.

The questionable spending included someone opening a $100,000 line of credit in July and liquidating station assets without approval of the WTVP board of directors.

WTVP's financial troubles were revealed in the wake of the station's former President Lesley Matuszak found dead at her Moss Avenue home on Sept. 28, one day after she resigned from her role as the head of WTVP. The Peoria County coroner later revealed Matuszak committed suicide.
